Instead of scouring portfolios, negotiating with agents, and photo shopping for its new campaign, Bare Escentuals blindly cast models based on their passions and values alone. Only after the contract signing were physical appearances revealed.
Sounds scary for a cosmetics brand, but Bare Escentuals kept its cool, trusting that inner strength and character are what make a woman gorgeous on the outside, too.
Lo and behold, the ads’ stars stun with a Force of Beauty that’s only enhanced by bareMinerals® products.

If you didn’t get emotional during her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress, you were probably watching True Detective.
We’d take Lupita Nyong’o over Rust Cohle any day. Which is why the actress is the object of our affection in today’s Care Package video, the new series in which we select gifts we think our favorite celebs would like.
From our favorite bright lipsticks to a little pendant of her homeland, we’re sure she’ll like our surprises/belated birthday gifts (she turned 31 on March 1).
Does anyone know the shipping address for cloud nine?
Want more? Check out what we sent supermodel Karlie Kloss.
We love giving gifts. Especially if finding them requires us to “research” gossip mags at work.
Introducing DailyCandy Care Package, our new video series in which we compile items for our favorite famous folks based on what we think they might like. First up is Karlie Kloss, who surely needs a picker-upper right now while jaunting from catwalk to catwalk (okay, so her life isn’t too shabby, but whatever).
From a sweatshirt showing off her Midwestern roots to a cookbook that’ll satisfy her documented affinity for breakfast, we box up a bevy of objects she’s sure to love. And nothing costs more than $60.
Which means we might end up getting a few things for ourselves in the process.
Sure, Corrections Officer Bennett gets his secret inmate girlfriend pregnant on Orange Is the New Black, but he’s still the show’s hot guy.
The actor behind the handsome lothario is Matt McGorry, and it’s not every day we get to talk to such a charming fellow. Instead of doing a standard interview, we thought (selfishly), Why not make it a date? So we did.
In today’s first (and, we hope, not last) First Date with … video, we go to one of New York’s best date spots, Commerce, and ask McGorry an array of questions that might make a lesser gentleman flee: Do you have tattoos? How much do you bench? And, of course, what’s your shoe size?
We did not, however, ask him how he feels about handcuffs.
Rumor has it Orange Is the New Black returns for a second season on Netflix in June. For more interviews with familiar faces, check out our sit-downs with gymnast Nastia Liukin, actress Zoey Deutch, and model Coco Rocha.

Most women have at some point in their lives (whether for fifteen minutes or fifteen years) dreamed of being an Olympic gymnast.
That’s why we flipped/aerialed/back-handspringed at the opportunity to sit down with Nastia Liukin, five-time medalist, now reporting for NBC Sports in Sochi, Russia. In today’s 5 Questions video, we ask her what it’s like to wear a leotard in front of millions, if she prefers Lochte or Phelps, and what song she would like to compete to.
Liukin, who lives in NYC and attends NYU, is tied with greats Shannon Miller and Mary Lou Retton for most medals won by a U.S. gymnast at the games.
We give her an all-around perfect score.
For more from Liukin, follower her on Instagram and Twitter. For more 5 Questions videos, check out our talks with Vampire Academy star Zoey Deutch, nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, and actress Greta Gerwig.
If the words strigoi and moroi mean anything to you, we’d probably be friends. You’re also probably 16.
Whatever. If loving YA vampire books is wrong, we don’t want to be right. Which is why we were excited to sit down with 19-year-old Zoey Deutch, star of Vampire Academy, the new movie based on the best-selling books by Richelle Mead.
In this video, the actress teaches us to pronounce difficult words from the book; dishes on her pet, Stinky Pete (real name); and tells us about the best Valentine’s Day she ever had — when she was 14.
Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got to go read War and Peace.
To watch the trailer and find showtimes for Vampire Academy (out Friday), go to va-movie.com.
A couple of ground rules for February 14: Don’t get a man a tie (unless he specifically requests it) and don’t get a woman a gym membership (even if she specifically requests it).
SuChin Pak and Mike Bender, who’ve been married two years, learned this lesson the hard way. That’s why, in today’s Currently Coveting video, they reveal their Valentine’s Day wishes ahead of time.
SuChin’s picks are conventional compared with Mike’s, whose choices (a water purifier?) suggest a fondness for Bear Grylls. It’s no surprise he’s the founder of website Awkward Family Photos.
Let’s hope his advice doesn’t result in a bunch of new submissions.

Many moons ago, I moved to SF with just two suitcases. I had zero housing prospects, I didn’t know a soul, and the iconic bridge seemed to be permanently immersed in fog.
Then the skies opened up: I found a Lower Haight apartment, 415 numbers slowly filled my phone, and I was hired to write about everything from comic book tarot card readers to seaweed foragers.
In today’s video, I introduce you to three Bay Area places I visit almost weekly: a veritable Sesame Street for artisans, a glamorous Pacific Heights flower shop, and a wine bar where you’ll want to become a regular.
I hope the video inspires you to venture outside your hood and try something new.
No bravery required.
Want more? Check out our senior editor’s favorite NYC businesses and our L.A. editor’s preferred hangouts. Our Chicago editor’s picks are coming soon.
When I first moved to New York from Virginia eight years ago, I thought Times Square was the cool place to live and Brother Jimmy’s BBQ was where I was going to find a husband.
Many (many) apartments and PBRs later, I like to think I’m a bit more discerning. For one, I have a job that exposes me to new things every day. For two, the frat party moved to Tinder.
In today’s video, I introduce you to three of my favorite Big Apple establishments: the best ramen in the city (I will gladly debate you on this if you think it’s Ippudo NY), Brooklyn-made dog treats for my little guy, and a Chelsea-based workout that isn’t completely horrific.
I hope the video encourages you to try my picks if you haven’t already. You might even see me there.
Hopefully I won’t be wearing my “going out” camisole.
Stay tuned for our San Fran, Los Angeles, and Chicago editors’ videos of local favorites, coming soon.
Technology has given us, among other things, the ability to know everything about the people we want to date before we even meet them. (He took shots on a trip to Cancun in 2006 with that girl?!)
So it’s no shocker that it complicates the relationships that ensue. In today’s Ask the Office Guy video, we enlisted Yahoo’s Primetime in No Time host and former Road Rules contestant Theo Von to break down a few digi issues.
From an NYC boyfriend who checks his Instagram compulsively to a guy in Chicago who wants to exchange email passwords, tricky situations are Von’s specialty.
We guarantee you’ll do an Internet search for him afterward.
To see Von on a regular basis (almost like you’re going steady), go to tv.yahoo.com. Follow Von on Twitter at @theovon. Got a question for the next Office Guy? Email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Whether we’ve recently been dumped, had a long day at work, or are just in a crappy mood, we all need an emergency empowerment jam.
The givens: “Single Ladies,” by Bey; “Girl on Fire,” by Alicia; and now — tuning into the indie station — “Renaissance Girls,” by Oh Land.
Get familiar with the song in today’s video. The Denmark-born, Brooklyn-based musician, whose real name is Nanna Øland Fabricius, performed the soon-to-be hit on our back couches with only her pipes and a toy piano.
If you like what you hear (you will), get her new album, Wish Bone (out September 24), and hit up her concerts tonight or next Tuesday. Why?
Because you’re a rock star.
See Oh Land tonight at Music Hall of Williamsburg, 66 North 6th Street, between Kent and Wythe Avenues, Williamsburg (musichallofwilliamsburg.com); doors, 8 p.m.; tickets ($20) at ticketmaster.com; and Tuesday at Gramercy Theatre, 127 East 23rd Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues (212-614-6932 or thegramercytheatre.com); doors, 7 p.m.; tickets ($20) at livenation.com. Download Wish Bone at itunes.com, $10. To get to know Oh Land, follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

You know when you find out a leading man is barely old enough to vote and then feel weird/gross that you fancied someone so young? The good news is that actor Miles Teller is 26.
Prepare for him to get even handsomer when you watch DailyCandy correspondent SuChin Pak’s interview, in which she finds out his thoughts on sex scenes, his hidden talents, and how often he visits f*ckyeahmilesteller.tumblr.com.
Want more? Watch our interview with his The Spectacular Now co-star, Shailene Woodley. To buy tickets to the movie (out August 2), go to fandango.com. Background art provided by upriseart.com.
We all googled her following The Descendants three years ago (yes, she really was Marissa Cooper’s little sister in The O.C. for a season). These days, after scoring roles in The Spectacular Now and Divergent, Shailene Woodley needs no introduction.
DC correspondent SuChin Pak sat down with the 21-year-old starlet for today’s 5 Questions to get the scoop on her ideal warm-weather rendezvous, what her childhood was like, and her favorite inspirational quote.

We’ve all been there: A co-worker has rank breath, a sibling won’t move out, an awesome boyfriend dresses like a tool, and a best friend dates someone terrible.
What’s the best way to handle all of the above? In this video, SuChin Pak finds out what actress Greta Gerwig would do.
Find showtimes for her latest movie, Frances Ha, at fandango.com. For more Greta Gerwig, check out our 5 Questions interview.
She’s got embarrassing songs on her iPod. She dated a guy who wore cowboy boots. Her favorite Kardashian is our favorite Kardashian.
Actress Greta Gerwig is BFF material. For proof, watch our videos today: First, we’ve got a 5 Questions interview with our correspondent SuChin Pak (above). Then, in a segment we’re calling Hypothetical Situations, we find out what Greta would do in common pickles (co-worker with bad breath, sibling who won’t move out, etc.).
Further evidence Greta is wonderful can be found throughout the new movie she co-wrote and stars in, Frances Ha. The film, out now, is a realistic take on friendship.
We hope to inspire the next one.
Find showtimes for Frances Ha at fandango.com. For more 5 Questions, check out SuChin’s interviews with model Coco Rocha, nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, and Veep actress Anna Chlumsky.
It’s normal to get nervous in the presence of greatness. But when Judith Hill came to our offices and performed on our back couch, we could barely form words.
In this video, she sings “Desperation,” which she wrote for Twenty Feet from Stardom (a film about the lives of backup singers, including hers, now playing). As you’ll see, her voice (which you might recognize from The Voice) blew us away.
Find Twenty Feet from Stardom showtimes at fandango.com. For more entertainment, check out June’s must-see movies, our GoWatchIt channels, and the latest Download picks.
Who doesn’t love a makeover? We have a fresh look, and we hope you’re as jazzed about it as we are.
Join chief correspondent SuChin Pak and style makers such as Alison Pincus of One Kings Lane, Christian Leone of Vaunte, and NBC’s 1st Look’s Ali Fedotowsky for a tour of the new features that make DailyCandy sweeter than ever.
We think you’ll love ’em.
Some nights you just want to stay inside, watch Clueless, and stuff your face. In this video, SuChin has a few items to make your evening that much sweeter.
This week’s picks are available at samorenyc.com, alderandcoshop.com, and dailycandy.com (we’ll show you how to make the DIY face scrub).
Most people reserve head-to-toe leopard print (socks included) for Halloween.
Lina Plioplyte is an exception.
When the Lithuania-born filmmaker dresses in full-body spots, she gets photographed by The Sartorialist.
In today’s video, we head to the street style superstar’s Brooklyn neighborhood to get the lowdown on her three favorite outfits — and attempt to uncover how she makes her Clarissa Explains It All-meets-Iris Apfel look work.
We’ve watched Plioplyte turn heads while behind the camera at multiple DailyCandy videos in the past, so when a group of high school boys asked for her digits during this shoot, we were hardly fazed.
She’s the cat’s meow.
To see Plioplyte’s work, go to teenagepeanut.com. Want more street style? Cast your vote in our contest to find the most stylish city in the country.
Wedding season is in full force (we’re sure your wallet is aware). In today’s video, SuChin has a dress, hair accessory, and nail polish that you can wear to all of them.
This week’s picks are available at pritinyc.com, bhldn.com, and jenniferbehr.com. For more of SuChin’s obsessions, check out her favorite videos on our YouTube channel.
Travel the world. Photograph well-heeled, beautiful people. Chronicle adventures. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.
That someone is Yvan Rodic, the brains behind go-to street style blog Face Hunter. In this 5 Questions with SuChin Pak video, we go behind the lens, learning everything from how Rodic chooses his subjects to his opinion on the most stylish city in the world (you’ll be surprised).
Rodic also fills us in on his latest book, Travels with Face Hunter, a picture diary of a year in his fabulous, jet-setting life.
He really took one for the team.
Travels with Face Hunter is available at amazon.com, $17. To read his blog, go to facehunter.blogspot.com. Want to keep watching? Check out our interviews with actress Anna Chlumsky, nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé, and supermodel Coco Rocha.
