Taking Atoll

Bikini Islands

bikini islands!A little history lesson:

Two score and 19 years ago (hello, 1946), while nasty nukes were being tested on an atoll known as Bikini, French engineer Louis Reard was inventing the two-piece bathing suit.

Thinking that his hot new design was sure to explode onto the scene, he decided to call it the bikini. (It’s true. We couldn’t make this stuff up.)

Fast forward to today and find Bikini Islands in Marina Del Rey. It’s a custom swimwear shop combining all the joys of sexy, flattering suits with global environmental sensibilities.

In addition to the signature line of styles done in a familiar high-end synthetic, there are two special collections: Happy Campers, for those who love hemp but don’t like to look like it; and Knit Fit, a hand-crocheted lot so slinky people will think you’re a fabric conservationist.

But if you can’t find the perfect thing in their selection, come up with your own. Bring in an old swimsuit or even a pair of panties whose bikini-bottom potential has often been speculated upon, and the pros there will recreate it in a color and size that fits your fancy and your fanny — whether you’re looking for something full-coverage or subatomic.

Either way, it’ll be the bomb.
