Food Swing
Akasha Restaurant, Bar, and Bakery Opens

We heard chef Akasha Richmond liked to go all the way.
And once we got a load of her new ecofriendly restaurant and bakery in Culver City, we knew the rumors were true.
The construction? Green. Appliances? Energy efficient. To-go supplies? Compostable. Cleaning products? Biodegradable. Even the servers wear organic cotton tees and Levi’s Eco jeans. And the food is, of course, all natural, organic, and comes from socially responsible and ecoconscious sources.
By day, the bakery turns out traditional, vegan, and low-fat breads and sweets, along with fair-trade coffee and tea. Come dinnertime, order biodynamic wines, beers, and spirits and munch on turkey burgers with homemade pickles, wild Marsala shrimp with tomato chutney and mint raita, and Coleman steaks. Save room for pastry chef Verite Mazzola’s chocolate tart with Big Tree Farms sea salt or apple tart with made-on-demand vanilla bean gelato.
You may even want sloppy seconds.
Akasha, 9543 Culver Boulevard, at Watseka Avenue, Culver City (310-845-1700 or akasharestaurant.com). For more information, go to chefakasha.com.
