Crate Expectations
San Francisco
February 19, 2010

When it comes to farm-to-table dining, you’ve already got the table part down.

The farm part? Not so much.

No matter. With new Edible Greens Planter, made from repurposed Napa wine crates, you can literally take your meal from windowsill to table. (You’ve got a windowsill, right?)

Each planter kit comes with premixed potting soil, a packet of organic Dr. Earth fertilizer, and mixed salad greens seeds (heirloom lettuces; spicy varieties like arugula, mache, and mizuna).

After planting your lettuces, wait six to eight weeks. Then pluck and eat. Easy-peasy instructions mean even the horticulturally challenged can keep their gardens alive.

Even better, the planters cost just $50.

So you don’t have to spend too much green.

Available at Paxton Gate’s Curiosities for Kids, 766 Valencia Street, between 18th and 19th Streets (415-252-9990 or paxtongate.com).
