General Custard

Dear Nana,

Boy, time flies, doesn’t it? Remember when you used to gather the grandkids around after mixing up your famous coconut cream pie, passing the spoon around for us to lick? After all these years, you still love sending pie just in time for the holidays.

Well, we were thinking (because we love you): Why don’t you take this year off? It’s not that we don’t appreciate the effort (the raisins were an especially, um, inventive touch). But we’ve all fallen in love with Flantastico, a new line of custardy wonders.

Flantastico’s founder, Mireya Alfonso, took a flan recipe passed down from her own abuela, started tinkering, and came up with a slew of specialty concoctions — like cafe con leche flan, orange rum flan, and Key lime flan. She also makes a seasonal pumpkin flan and takes special requests.

Of course, we’ll never forget your version, either. No matter how you slice it.
