Tree’s Company

Miami-Dade County Adopt-a-Tree Program

Three words to live by when considering real estate: location, location, location. Preferably one that doesn’t feature panoramic views of I-95, mirrored living room walls, and less shade than the Gobi desert.

You could hold out for that dream home with a big oak out back — or you could adopt.

Each month, from now until October, Miami-Dade County’s Adopt-a-Tree program allows single-family home and duplex or triplex owners to claim two free trees from various sites around town.

This month, choose from vera wood, white geiger, jackfruit, and green buttonwood. Or hold out for July’s selections, which include longan, pigeon plum, Queensland crepe, and the ever popular mango. Avocado, red mulberry, and wild tamarind are a few that’ll be available later in the year.

So go ahead, take your time: As with that dream home, you wouldn’t want to make a rash decision.

But unlike that dream home, there’s no need to worry about, you know, seed money.

The next Adopt-a-Tree event takes place Saturday, 9 a.m.-noon, at Cutler Ridge Park, 10100 Southwest 200 Street (305-468-5900 or miamidade.gov/derm/adoptatree).
