Important Safety Information
NuvaRing® is a combined hormonal contraceptive containing hormones similar to those in birth control pills. Most side effects of NuvaRing® are not serious, and those that are occur infrequently. Serious risks include blood clots, which may lead to stroke or heart attack. Some studies suggest that this risk is slightly increased by combination oral contraceptives containing desogestrel; additional studies do not support this finding. It is unknown if the risk of blood clots is different with NuvaRing®. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially if you are over 35. Women who use combination hormonal contraceptives are strongly advised not to smoke. NuvaRing® does not protect against HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases.
