Every Tuesday night, we try pushing our way through the crowd at The Florida Room for a chance to chat with local soul shakers The Big Bounce. After several failed attempts (and a few thrown elbows), we surrendered — and went through their publicist.
With power vocals and soulful piano courtesy of Brendan O’Hara and ridiculous vocal percussions by beat boxer Komakozie, the duo has developed quite a following in this town. And they’re sharing the love.
DailyCandy: Best cocktail in the city?
The Big Bounce: Depends on which local spirit scientist you get. If you end up with Adam or John at The Florida Room; Clark at the Mondrian or W South Beach; or Chris at CJ’s, you’re good.
DC: Best restaurant to cure a hangover?
TBB: Surf Road Taco in Hallandale. The fresh mahi mahi tacos are grilled with this crazy sauce. Plus, they put the cheese below the chicken on their hard tacos — that’s love.
DC: Favorite late-night eating spot?
TBB: We can’t get enough of CJ’s Crab Shack — grouper fingers, crab cakes, crab dip, and grouper in a bag.
DC: Favorite Miami bands?
TBB: Miami’s live music scene is blowing up. We love Afrobeta, ArtOfficial, The JeanMarie, The State Of, Jahfé, The Hongs, Raffa & Rainer, and, of course, Suénalo.
DC: Where do you shop?
O’Hara: Fiber & Fellow, an L.A.-based clothing line, has been very kind to us. Then there’s Phoshizo, an up-and-coming T-shirt line straight out of the MIA, and Penguin has been a go-to.
Komakozie: The Shoe Gallery, the Shoe Gallery, and the Shoe Gallery.
DC: If you could have a drink with anyone, who would it be?
O’Hara: Obama.
Komakozie: Mos Def.
DC: If you weren’t a musician, you’d be …
Komakozie: a pro skater.
O’Hara: homeless.
