Advance apologies to people with pricey dental work, braces, or a lack of patience. Today’s topic is toffee.
Like all things gone artisanal, Mermaid Sea Salt Toffee takes the sweet stuff to a whole new level of gourmet.
Handmade by Miami-based food columnist and cookbook author Linda Bladholm, each piece starts with an organic, buttery vanilla base, which is infused with a curry of cumin, mustard and fenugreek seeds, red chilies, cinnamon, and turmeric. The toffee is then dusted with fancy toppings like bittersweet chocolate, crystallized ginger, sea salt, coconut, pistachios, or dried lavender.
So you see, they’re not meant for gobbling but for savoring slowly.
Otherwise, you’ll bust a molar.
Available at Yiya’s Bakery, 646 Northeast 79th Street, Upper East Side (305-754-3337).
