We asked NYC-based quilting expert Carrie Strine to share her most advanced craft secrets. Then we remembered we a) know squat about sewing and b) can’t will things into existence using our imaginations. To go easy on us, Strine gave us instructions for starter-level linen coasters quilted with racy neon thread — a pop of color that makes these squares anything but stuffy.
You’ll need:
¼ yard of cotton batting (or Insul-Bright)
¼ yard of 100 percent linen or cotton fabric
Spool of neon or DayGlo thread
Sewing machine with walking foot, iron, scissors, measuring tape
Step 1: Cut eight 4½-inch linen squares and four 4½-inch batting squares.
Step 2: From bottom to top, layer one square of batting, one linen square face up, and one linen square face down.
Step 3: Using the walking foot on your sewing machine, sew ¼-inch around the square edges, leaving a 1-inch hole in the center of one side.
Step 4: Turn right side out using the small side opening.
Step 5: Push out corners and press with iron.
Step 6: Quilt ¼-inch around entire edge.
Step 7: Applique a small scrap of fabric over the side opening (optional).
Step 8: Create random quilting lines as desired.
Step 9: Trim excess thread, pour a cold drink, and protect your furniture.
