In the Kitchen: Frozen Peanut Butter Pops

In the Kitchen: Frozen Peanut Butter Pops

Catch's Thiago Silva demos a summer treat

When we were kids, we ate spoonfuls of peanut butter between meals. And by “when we were kids,” we mean yesterday.

Here to make shoveling heaps of spread into your face socially acceptable is Thiago Silva, executive pastry chef at Catch. In today’s video, he creates his renowned frozen peanut butter pops.

The dessert is easy to make (it requires no heat, and Silva actually prefers to use Skippy) and great for adult and kid parties alike. Plus, it keeps for a month in the freezer (or leave it unfrozen and use as cake filler).

If you’re not the DIY type, he serves it every night at Catch alongside the peanut butter cup souffle. (While you’re there, the s’mores pizza is also the shiz.)

It’ll bring out your not-so inner child.

Catch, 21 Ninth Avenue, at West 13th Street (212-392-5978 or catchnewyorkcity.com). Think you missed something in the video? Here’s the full recipe. For more sweet treats, watch how to make a mojito sundae and Manhattan float with Jeni Britton Bauer from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.

And rocks the DailyCandy office

In the spirit of full disclosure, we have a bit of a thing for Lisa Loeb. “Stay” is our go-to karaoke jam. We were frame junkies long before Warby Parker. And we embrace (and at the same time completely reject) our place in Generation X.

Which is why we geeked out when she visited our NYC office to perform from her latest kids’ book and album, Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ & Shakin’.

Since she rocked our world in 1994, Loeb has released eight albums, starred in two reality shows, launched an eyewear collection, founded a nonprofit, and become a mom.

Her latest fam-friendly effort combines tunes, activities, and a ten-song CD that are guaranteed to get you and your kiddies off the couch and dancing your pants off.

Turn your backyard into a kid oasis

Max from across the street got a new swing set. Nora from around the corner plays in a custom-designed tree house.

Your kid? Tell him the grass is greener in his own backyard.

Turn your turf into a kid-friendly oasis with these four easy projects. A plastic container becomes buried treasure. A soda bottle morphs into a sprinkler. Bed sheets pull double duty as a fort. And graham crackers and ice cream make your lawn the most popular one on the block.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, neighbor.

Don’t have a yard? Try turning your living room into a drive-in movie theatre.

Parenting tricks of the trade

If getting the kids up, dressed, and out of the house is a major production, raise both your hands. Now, inhale deeply, center your hands in prayer position, and exhale while clicking play on the video above.

If these four easy tricks don’t turn your morning routine into breezy fun, take a deep breath and try again.

Celebrate the return of the birds

Looking for signs of spring? Then bird is the word.

Attract a flock to your backyard with a tree full of cookie cutter bird feeders. This simple, kid-friendly DIY uses water, gelatin, and birdseed to make a welcome-home feast for our winged friends.

Once the feeders are dry, gather your chickadees and hang your creation from your porch, deck, or tree with string.

And then look to the sky.

Heading outdoors? Find creative inspiration with DIY stamp art and a scavenger hunt on the rocks.

A creative twist on movie night

The only problem with family movie night? Not enough room for everyone on the couch.

Think outside the cardboard box and turn cast-off packaging into kiddie seats perfectly sized for a living room drive-in.

Customize their rides using paper plates for tires, ribbon-wrapped steering wheels, and a favorite pillow for a plush and cozy interior. Add racing stripes with markers and make a license plate out of stickers.

Just before you press play, deliver popcorn to their cars. Then sit back and enjoy the show.

Hiding from winter weather? Go undercover with a DIY mask bar.

A kid-friendly New Year's Eve plan

New Year’s Eve is amateur night in the big city.

Which is why we prefer to party with the kids — our kids.

Turn your living room into a family-friendly Times Square with a bright balloon drop. All you need is fishing net (not fishnets), balloons, craft putty, and a crowd of minis who think staying up past 8 p.m. is worth celebrating.

Use the putty to attach the net to the ceiling, fill with the balloons, and when the time is right (whatever time you decide), release the balloons and step back.

This party is about to pop.

Keep the fun going all winter break long with a DIY mask bar and craft center.

Pass the Gratitude

Pass the Gratitude

A family activity for the Thanksgiving table

Parental responsibility No. 425: teaching your kids that Thanksgiving is more than a long weekend bookended by parades and leftover pumpkin pie.

Get the message across with a gratitude jar. Before the turkey is served, gather your pilgrims and ask them what they’re grateful for. Write down each gem on a slip of paper (Mom and Dad, you do it, too) and tuck the notes into a jar.

When setting the table for your fall feast, use the jar as a centerpiece of riches to share with family and friends.

And because not everyone is so fortunate, we’re using our bounty to spread the word about Future Fortified. More than 200 million kids don’t have diets with enough essential nutrients — and Future Fortified wants to change that.

Join us on Twitter this week (#thankfulforthefuture) and share what you’re thankful for.

So we can build a better future for all.

Our friends at Future Fortified have created a message template to help get your family’s gratitude jar started. Find out more about their effort to rid the world of malnutrition at futurefortified.org.

An Undercover Party

An Undercover Party

How to make a mask bar

The majority of the adult American population requires an excuse (read: Halloween) to indulge its gemstone-and-feather-costume fantasies (drag queens, Katy Perry, and Big Bird excluded).

But every day is a dress-up day for the 6-and-under set. Which is why we think a mask bar ensures success at a Halloween fete — or on an average Thursday afternoon.

We suggest prepping felt mask shapes — owl, octopus, bunny, superhero — ahead of time. Then gather jewels, glitter, pipe cleaners, fabric scraps, jingle bells, and any other accoutrement that goes well with glue. Unload the supplies on a table and let little revelers have their way.

We bet the results will be too cute to keep undercover.

Looking for more creative ideas? Harvest art is still in season.

Reap What You Sow, Then Paint It

Reap What You Sow, Then Paint It

A fall harvest art project

Your little’s relationship with produce is less than fruitful. If it’s not juiced, pouched, or rolled up, she’s not interested.

But we have a way to stamp out the problem once and for all.

It just takes a little creativity — and a lot of paint. Turn apples into lunchtime art, celery into floral masterpieces, and potatoes into just about anything at all. Slice, dip, stamp, and play.

We’re sure they’ll fall for it.

How to get crafty with a bookcase

Glitter and glue sticks go together like Lewis and Clark — it’s always an adventure.

But as much as we love a good art project, we’re also a bit crazy about an orderly play space. That’s why we’re building a case for the bookcase craft center.

It’s simple enough that even the most artistically challenged parent can pull it together, small enough that it fits into a kid-size bedroom, and organized enough that a 4-year-old can manage the cleanup.

Don’t believe us? Just watch.

The Coolest Father’s Day Ever

The Coolest Father’s Day Ever

A scavenger hunt on ice

When it comes to being the fun parent, there’s no contest — Dad always wins.

On Father’s Day, help him keep his cool cred with a scavenger hunt on ice. In today’s video (our first-ever Kids production), we show you how your chips off the old block can have a chilled-out time with dear old Dad.

All you need is distilled water, a few toys that can get wet, a freezer, and the foresight to prep the activity in advance.

But that shouldn’t be a problem. Moms are cool like that.

A New Holiday Role Model

Dedicated Video: Barbie "A Perfect Christmas" DVD

You may think perfect Christmas is the most underrated oxymoron out there. Whether it’s the wonky tree lights, the overdone ham, or the aunties who spat, something always manages to wrinkle the plan, right?

Once your daughter has watched the all-new BarbieTM DVD (and displayed her free-with-purchase BarbieTM merch from select retailers), she’ll be the first to tell you otherwise.

A snowstorm diverts the New York-bound holiday flight of BarbieTM and her three sisters, stranding the girls in a remote town called Tannenbaum. Needless to say, their initial reaction is glum.

But the clan opts to make the best of it, embracing new friends and experiences and holding to what’s really important at Christmas: the joy of being together.

Your daughter clearly gets her rosy outlook on life from you.

Learn more about A Perfect Christmas online at barbie.com/perfectchristmas and purchase the DVD at select retailers to receive free BarbieTM merchandise.

Man vs. Machine

Around here, we like a little friendly competition. Especially when it comes to food.

So when we got word of a brilliant new creation called the ChefStack, an awe-inspiring machine that can churn out 200 perfect pancakes an hour, three words came to mind:

Pancake. Eating. Showdown.

In today’s video, three carefully selected DailyCandy gluttons go head-to-head to see who can finish his or her plate of hot-off-the-conveyor flapjacks the fastest.

We’ll warn you right now: Things get pretty messy (especially in the case of one very special contestant) as the hotcakes get pounded.

Right alongside our dignity.

Audrey Louise Reynolds Dyed Goods

For us, life’s a game of do or dye. (Really, have you ever known us to resist a good pun?)

And now that we’ve met Audrey Louise Reynolds, the crafty Carolina-turned-Brooklyn girl who’s name-dropped by colorphiles far and wide, it’s mostly the latter.

In our latest video, Reynolds, who just started selling her hand-dyed shoes, dresses, and scarves at No. 6, shows you how to color your own threads using strawberries. If you’re feeling creative, you can use other fruits and veggies, too. (It’s easy! And it smells good.)

You’re probably already familiar with her handiwork: She dyes for Wendy Nichol and ecofriendly clothing line Bodkin — and does tons of custom orders.

After all, it’s get busy livin’ or get busy dyein’.

Fish Out of Water

Deep in the heart of the Bronx, during the wee hours of the morning, there exists a place so smelly, so slimy, only the heartiest of men dare walk its cavernous halls.

Naturally, we had to go there, too.

It’s the Fulton Fish Market at Hunts Point, where we recently accompanied Ani Papa, owner of Fort Greene’s new Mediterranean-inspired seafood resto Aqualis Grill.

Papa goes there two or three times a week to hand-select what’ll be served at Aqualis, from gigantic swordfish to tiny squid (calamari, yum) and downright perfect sea bass.

If you don’t like the sight of a fresh catch, this could make you a little squeamish.

Though we’re pretty sure you’ll be hooked.

The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project

Same As It Ever Was

If wearing the same outfit three — okay, five — days in a row is wrong, we don’t want to be right.

But 365 days in a row? There isn’t a European shower strong enough for that.

Fortunately, Sheena Matheiken, the genius behind The Uniform Project, has seven copies of the cotton black dress she’s wearing every single day for a year — all in an effort to raise money for Indian school children living in slums.

We recently caught up with her to find out what it’s like slipping into the same thing every day, how she lands her amazing accessories, and if things ever get, um, smelly (turns out they don’t).

Matheiken left us feeling pretty inspired, and we hope you’ll feel the same after watching the video.

Over and over and over again.

BK Broiler

You have to admit, there was always something a little sexy about The Big Lebowski’s número uno bowler: his knack for sass, that weird ponytail thing, the way he, um, licked the ball.

On second thought, he was gross. But there’s nothing unattractive about Brooklyn Bowl, the amazing-beyond-amazing new bowling alley/Blue Ribbon resto/rock venue in Williamsburg.

We don’t wanna give the whole video away (this is one of our favorites so far), but we’re pretty sure this place is gonna be the new in-spot when it opens next week after months of preparation.

Praise Jesús.
