Liquid Assets: Big Bar's DailyCandy Cocktail

Custom libations in Nob Hill

big bar!

There’s a tiny new bar in Nob Hill ironically called Big, where a kerosene lamp outside denotes its status. Here, sole bartender Brian Felley (Fleur de Lys, Garçon) takes a favorite style, spirit, or even suggestion of an attitude to concoct a custom libation for each lucky patron. (With space for only 25, you’re truly blessed to be inside.)

Inspired by a rather rough work day, we went with checklist in hand:

Seeking: An after-hours pick-me-up.
Style: Fresh but not in the inappropriate way.
Spirit: Now trending? Tequila and gin.

Felley heard our cry. He whipped up hickory-smoked gin, tequila, fresh squeezed lime juice, and gum syrup with a few drops of lemongrass and lemon-thyme chili tincture. To finish, he topped with ginger beer and garnished with lime zest. It was delicious, refreshing, and not the least bit improper.

Best yet, inspiration sits on either side with other weary imbibers getting their liquid prescription. For this reason (and the fact that there are only six stools), it gets cozy. We made fast friends with our fellow drinkers and even tasted each other’s concoctions.

For now, it’s only open three days a week, but the coming months promise expanded hours and guest bartenders from near and far.

Small space, big plans.
