It’s been years since you headed south of the (Washington) border. See what’s new.
Fork, Meet Mouth
Cozy St. Jack has emerged as a favorite for its French fare (chicken liver mousse, frog legs, frites), creative cocktails, and made-to-order madeleines. At Lovely’s Fifty-Fifty, wood-fired pies highlight seasonal ingredients; handmade ice cream in flavors such as honey lavender and malted milk ball mean you should save room for dessert. No trip to P-Town is complete without a meal at James Beard Award winner Andy Ricker’s Southeast Asian spot, Pok Pok. The must-try: Vietnamese fish sauce wings.
Get Around
Rent a Brompton folding or Dutch city bike from Clever Cycles and hit the streets. Enjoy the great outdoors via a hike or nature walk through 5,000-acre Forest Park. Head inside to check out Dharma Strasser Maccoll’s intricate works — hand-formed ceramic pieces sewn onto paper in patterns resembling blossoms — at Augen Gallery. Don’t miss 70 Years, 70 Photographs, an exhibition of some of Portland Art Museum’s better acquisitions in the last seven decades.
Whip Out Your Wallet
Shopping is plentiful in the Pearl District, but Lizard Lounge is beloved for men’s and women’s clothing (Redwing, Pendleton, Nau), accessories, gifts, and apothecary. If names such as Elizabeth and James and Yumi Kim get you excited, do damage at new Brewery Blocks boutique House of Lolo. In the market for a pair of skinnies? Head to Blake to find an endless supply of denim and the shop’s expert fitters.
Slog aside, there’s no reason not to hightail it to Portlandia right now.
