Clyde Felted Fall Hats Please the Fashion Police

Criminally good toppers

Under the Fall Headgear Penal Code, there are misdemeanors (visors, straw boaters) and there are crimes (street vendor fedoras, Biebs-esque truckers).

Stay ahead of the law with a bonnet from Clyde.

For her first collection of handmade felt hats, Canada-born, NYC-based designer and model Dani Griffiths (known for chunky knit accessories) keeps silhouettes simple and agrarian. Each piece is formed by hand from velour felt and finished with an unfussy leather band or braid.

Steal the show in a brown wide-brim chapeau or go for the same round-top style in cornflower blue. A khaki and white day topper is what a modern-day Lizzie Bennet would wear, while the no-frills angular fedora in black hints at “Spy Vs. Spy.”

You’ll have to fight us for our favorite — an elegant white cloche with extended brim — since Griffiths keeps production small.

It’s arresting.

Available at Assembly New York, 170 Ludlow Street, between Stanton and Houston Streets (212-253-5393 or assemblynewyork.com), $270-$290. To see styles, go to welcometoclyde.com.
