Screen Play: “The American Scream”

Sunday bloody Sunday

the american scream!

You tuned into the macabre tales of Mitt and Barry. We suggest getting the Willards from a more uplifting scream fest.

Trick-or-treat over to Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where Halloween is the Super Bowl of holidays. Michael Paul Stephenson’s documentary, The American Scream (trailer below), premieres Sunday.

Similar to other human interest stories like Marwencol and Waste Land, Stephenson’s tale cheers on the human spirit. The flick follows three families, or home haunters (yes, that’s a thing), as they work fourteen- to sixteen-hour days prepping their homes with life-size coffins, headless Barbie dolls, and papier-mache monsters — it’s not hoarding if you throw fake blood on it — and finales with one bloodcurdling fright night.

It comes from the man behind Best Worst Movie and took Best Picture in the Documentary Features category at Fantastic Fest.

There’s no debate — it’s a winner.

The American Scream premieres Sunday, 8 p.m. EST, on NBCUniversal’s Chiller network. To see theater showtimes, go to theamericanscreammovie.com. For more horror movies to die for, click through our Roundup and films to stream now.
