Q&A: Woman Behind the Blog

Habitually Chic's Heather Clawson

habitually chic!

When it comes to style bloggers, there are those that overshare (cue never-ending self-portraits and humble-brag tweets) and those that don’t. The latter — like Habitually Chic interiors blogger Heather Clawson — leave us hungry for more.

We jumped at the chance to peek behind the curtain and ask Clawson about her morning routine, hotel habits, and new book, Habitually Chic: Creativity at Work, which captures fashion types (Chris Benz, Michael Bastian, Jenna Lyons) at their respective HQs.

Name: Heather Clawson

Neighborhood: Upper East Side, Manhattan

Occupation: Blogger

Describe your workplace in three words or less.
Chic, small, and organized.

Why are you so curious?
As much as I love beautiful spaces, I’m also interested in the stories behind them. A lot of my readers are stuck in a cubicle at a job they hate, so I always hope sharing those inspiring stories motivates them to make a change or take a chance.

How do you start a typical work day?
In my pajamas at my desk. There might be a Diet Coke involved as well.

Finish this sentence: “When I grow up, I want to be…”
A worldwide brand.

What’s the secret to getting people to let you snoop in their spaces?
I’ve always been supportive and positive on my blog. I think everyone knew that I would show them in the best light and that they’d be in good company. I started with my own list [of subjects] but love how it evolved over time.

How did you track down your subjects?
The guys at Flair Home suggested I shoot the Commune office when I was in Los Angeles, and while I was at Michael Bastian, his public relations director, Eugenia Gonzalez Ruiz-Olloqui, told me that jewelry designer Philip Crangi had a great workspace and put me in touch with his sister.

It became an eclectic mix of uptown, downtown, young, old, established, and up-and-coming creative elites.

You’re traveling for this new book. What hotel can’t you wait to crash in?

I’m staying at the new Four Seasons in Toronto this week and can’t wait to luxuriate in their bathtub. I stayed at the Four Season in Marrakech, and you could practically swim in theirs.

Hoarders, Antiques Road Show, or The Price Is Right?
Antiques Road Show. I dream of owning an antiques store someday.

Who is your right-hand woman or man?
I wish I had one! I don’t even have a dog. I have resumes that I haven’t had time to go through yet. I need help just finding help!

What home goods are you coveting on the Web right this minute?
I would buy up every vintage French chair from Jayson Home if I had the room. My apartment is pretty much close to being finished at this point, but I would make room for an Hermès blanket.

Finish this sentence: “I refuse to be photographed without…”
Full hair and makeup.
