Q&A: Sisters Behind the Site

Foodie siblings that keep it in the family

the new potato danielle and laura kosann!

’Tis the season for talking, thinking, and obsessing about what’s currently filling our plates. This week, we’re on to the next dish with the sibs behind NYC-based foodie site The New Potato.

Names: Danielle and Laura Kosann

Location: West Village, NYC (Laura) and Upper West Side, NYC (Danielle)

Editor-in-chief (Laura) and creative director (Danielle) of The New Potato and Shoplooks

What are you eating right now?
Laura: Soho House club sandwich.
Danielle: Taïm Greek salad

Of all of the foodies that you interviewed, who cooked the best dish?
It’s hard to say whose was best, but Mauro Maccioni recently cooked us a great risotto in the back kitchen at Le Cirque.

Where do you shop for kitchen supplies?
Online at Mignon Kitchen Co. and Williams-Sonoma. On foot (and for the ideal selection) at West Elm Market in Dumbo [Brooklyn].

If you had to be reincarnated as a dish, what would it be?
We’d like to think Jonathan Waxman’s roast chicken from Barbuto, because all of New York is in love with it!

Which post left readers most hungry for more?
An interview with Tom Colicchio. He talked about the irony of competitive food TV — despite his being host on the country’s biggest competitive food TV show — and it sparked quite the online conversation.

What are you working on next?

A huge January relaunch of The New Potato. Stay tuned!

What do you really want for the holidays this year?

Laura: A vintage Longines men’s watch I spotted at Double RL a few weeks back. It’s a major splurge, but I have a timepiece obsession!
Danielle: Diana Vreeland’s Memo from Visionaire. I am currently obsessed with her.

If cooks were superheroes, what would your super power be?

Laura: Patience. I’m impatient with all other things, but when it comes to letting something like baby back ribs simmer for hours and hours till they’re falling off the bone? Waiting’s a nonissue.
Danielle: My guacamole. Let’s just say it’s the one thing I’d like Bobby Flay to challenge me to in a throwdown.
