Scout Society: Wonderland Beauty's Michael Angelo

A pretty cute chat with the NYC hair pro

Meet Scout Society member Michael Angelo.

How do you pay the rent?
Thinking about how people look! I have a salon and “beautique” in New York City called Wonderland Beauty Parlor. I’m a hairdresser and a makeup artist and a photographer and a designer. Here’s a shot from a workshop I developed for Oribe Hair Care. [7] Phew!

How else do you fill your days?
I train a few days a week at Belleon Body with Carlos Leon. He’s very inspiring. (A beauty guru still needs a fitness guru.) [4] Scouting brands, talent, and inspiration for Wonderland is a constant. And I’ve recently begun to explore filmmaking, and that’s really exciting! My first project will debut this Easter.

Who are you following these days and why?
greyeravintage — A style guru.
somalymam — Keeps me in check.
houseofexposure — Inspires the Hell out of me.
ezzaoconnor — Erin O’Connor is breathtaking. [5]
jdavidmckenney — Sees inside my mind and then draws it on paper.
advancedstyle — Gives me something to look forward to. [9]

Let’s get Scouting. A self-portrait?
I’m visiting Yayoi Kusama’s “Fireflies on the Water” at the Whitney Museum. [1]

Your medicine cabinet?
Potions not lotions. I feel like creams are suffocating, so I use oils and serums to look after my skin. [3]

Your significant other, lover, or BFF?
My darling husband, Scott MacDougall, PhD candidate at Fordham, making me look smart by association. [12]

Your pets?
This is Blue, a rescue from Rikers Island; for real — my “gangsta” cat. And then there’s Bartleby, a teeny toy fox terrier who loves pop art. [10, 8]

What one photo do you refuse to delete from your phone and why?
I was in Capri last summer doing hair and makeup for a wedding. Every day I woke up to perfection all around me, grateful that I was somewhere so special because of my work. One day the sea was “too angry” (as the locals called it) for swimming, and I must have been visibly disappointed. An Italian woman reminded me that nothing’s perfect and suggested I refocus my energy and enjoy something else on Capri instead. It’s a little reminder of that, especially on the days when the job isn’t a fun one. [6]

What’s the last thing you ate?
A Cubano panino from Sullivan Street Bakery, quite possibly the most heavenly sandwich in NYC! [2]

Your morning commute?
I live in West Chelsea and work in the Meatpacking District. I walk the High Line to and from, and it’s miraculous what a little stroll above the noise and traffic will do. [11]
