Alison Lou Emoticon Jewelry

Baubles for the Digital Age

First came winky-face IMs. Then emoticons formally invaded work emails. Now: an Emoji translation of Moby-Dick featuring Ish :).

Advance technology into the real world with baubles by Alison Lou.

Designer and NYC native Alison Chemla honed her craft as an intern for House of Waris and Finn Jewelry. We’re guessing she learned about emoticons same as you.

Start simple with Chemla’s gold face medallions. There’s a classic smiley for purists, but remember, feelings are rarely so emphatic. We suggest a ruby-studded lover to layer or a happy face with black diamond shades to play it cool.

Cocktail rings with single features (lips, googly eyes, a reversible smile/frown) or symbols (a screw, the letter “U”) stack to reveal cheeky meanings; stud earrings (enamel and gold hearts, blood and teardrops) convey a more direct message.

The more complicated pieces (read: iced out) are pricey, but, hey, diamonds are iconic.

And we <3 them.

Available at FiveStory, 18 East 69th Street, between Madison and Fifth Avenues (212-288-1338 or fivestoryny.com), $220-$9,000.
