Revamping the Rolex

Ever looked at the Mona Lisa and thought, “I would have painted her as a blonde?”

Secretly wanted your initials on the Louis Vuitton luggage instead of the classic LV?

Wished that Tiffany blue were more of a periwinkle?

For those oh-so-tired of the same old silver Oyster Perpetual, here’s a new way for you to edit one of the quintessential American status symbols: the Rolex.

Hit Sasson Thomas, Inc., a custom design shop that has, for the past five years, been refashioning Rolexes in almost every way a diva could want (often using Ralph Lauren paint swatches for the face color - how chic!).

For those imbued with more moxie, Geoffrey Thomas, the shop’s owner, will put any flat stone around the dial, just as he did for DJ extraordinaire and girl-about-town Samantha Ronson. “It’s the coolest watch, because red’s my favorite color and my band is called Lil’ Red.” (Hers is a vintage Oyster Perpetual.) “You can always make a sport watch more fun,” says Thomas, who has declared salmon this summer’s color. For the supremely fickle, you can change the dial color too.
