There once was a yen for Nantucket…
After all this talk of
preppy this and preppy that—the return of yachting, the
pink and green, the Muffies, the Biffs, and the
Chips…
From whence does the Prep Mafia come?
While the
New York Times has gone into color, one place is still called the Gray Lady.
Nantucket!
God forbid we forgo Nick & Toni’s for one weekend…but Scoop sold out of ribbon belts
! How could we resist?
So while there was still some summer left…off we went. Move over L.I.E; It’s Nicer in Nantucket isn’t just a bumper sticker. You take an old- fashioned ferry boat there! You smell the sea!
And look, Ma! No cars! (Well, not so many, anyway… )
For quick access to shoppes (yes, we’re spelling it “shoppes,” movin’ old-school speed here) there are speedier methods than by way of espadrille-on-cobblestone street.
Bikes are the way to go!
Rent a quaint Schwinn from Holiday Cycle, 4 Chester Street(508-228-3644).
Then beeline it to ground zero for
Nantucket
Reds (Whale pants are so May 2001).
Murray’s Toggery Shop, 62 Main Street (508-228-0437).
And Fendi baguette? Get over yourself! In Nantucket, people actually carry
baskets. How can you not love that?
Should you need to pause on a shopping spree for sustenance, you don’t have to be in the Spielberg party to get prime seating at
Bluefin, 15 South Beach Street (508-228-2033). . The sashimi rocks!
Afterward, throw on your Lilly Pulitzer finest and throw back a Goombay Smash at the Straight Wharf Bar (even drinking out of a jar feels quaint!).
Straight Wharf Restaurant, 6 Harbor Square (508-228-4499).
Back to shopping. Gold cuff bracelet? Thanks, but no thanks. Get a real rope bracelet. Just like the one you wore as a kid.
And while you’re at it, splurge at the Juice Bar—brownie a la mode in a homemade cone is definitely in the zone.
The Juice Bar, 12 Broad Street (508-228-5799).
Still have that hankering for what’s hot in the city? You can find enough ribbon belts at Eye of the Needle to sink a whaling ship. Eye of the Needle, 14 Federal Street (508-228-1923).
Do we really have to go home now?
