Big in Japan

Cool means never having a sign. (What’s that about? The thrill of the hunt? This one has always confused us.)

Cool means scoring stuff you can’t get anywhere else. (Can you say “Beastie Boys Action figures”?)

Cool things are (very often) Japanese. (Hello Kitty toaster, anyone?)

Here’s one that’s almost too cool for Candy. Tokion Shop is the headquarters for the cult Japanese-American magazine Tokion, the pop-culture bible for urban, international, supercool youth. Toikon is so cool that we’ll admit we don’t fully understand it. We know this gang is miles ahead of everybody. (It makes Wallpaper* look like Readers Digest.)

How does one find such cool? Like we said, there’s no sign, so follow the club kids to the mural-painted storefront (done by Brazilian graffiti artists Os Gemeos). The facade acts as a mobile “gallery space.” (That’s pretty cool.) The tiny shop sells issues of the magazine, Paul Frank wallets, Stussy socks, and Tokion clocks. Calling all moms-to-be, Tokion baby wear is coming this fall. Oh, and sorry, kids, the Beastie Boys action figures sell for a thousand bucks, but the proceeds go to charity.

Now, that’s what we call cool.
