You have your Hello Kitty vacuum cleaner.
Your Tokion Beastie Boys action figures.
Now, would you get off your bum and go check out some culture?
Go check out “My Reality: Contemporary Art and the Culture of Japanese Animation” is running at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. The exhibit’s works are sinister yet whimsical, offering a real look at the latest developments in Japanese art. Pop artists Kenji Yanobe, Takashi Murakami, and Mariko Mori have created sculptures, paintings, and drawings inspired by Japanese cartoons and comic books. (Think ultra-cute meets sci-fi replete with robots, aliens, and space vessels.) The museum is also running free screenings of classic anime films (Japanese animation) the weekend of September 29th.
A caveat! This ain’t Disney. So if you’re out looking for sweetness and light, rent Bambi.
