What's Smokin'?

Can barbecue be sleek? Or, dare we say, chic?

It is when it’s Blue Smoke, the latest from master restaurateur Danny Meyer, of Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern. The place officially opens next Tuesday but is already accepting reservations, so book now. Once word gets out…

The opening also marks the return of the much-loved downstairs club Jazz Standard, which had closed. Danny’s cousin James Polsky books the acts, which should give you a sense of what an alpha-male paradise this place is.

The menu follows suit with guilty pleasures like pulled pork, St. Louis-style ribs, and salt-and-pepper ribs. Run over your boyfriend’s dog recently? Bring your fella here and he just might forgive you.

So there’s a bit of a theme-park vibe: barbecue and jazz made easy. But if anyone can pull it off, it’s Meyer, who says he “always wanted to open a really wonderful ‘joint.’”

The only things smoking here are the meat and the music, but we’re digging it.
