Joan of Art

Picture this: art that reveals someone’s intimate relationship with nature.

Sound like pseudo-Emersonism? Part of a twelve-step self-help program? The Seat of the Soul? Come on.

No, this is not Tree-Hugging for Dummies. This is the Joan Mitchell retrospective, which opens today. It’s a collection of the Abstract Expressionist’s vibrant works, which show an affinity for the paintings of bigwigs like de Kooning and Pollock. Think bold colors and lots of bold brushstrokes — torment made gorgeous, if you will. (DailyCandy goes art critic on your ass?)

So, wrap your pretty little head around that, and head to either the Whitney Museum of Art or Edward Tyler Nahem Fine Art. Both are holding exhibits of her work. And, of note: According to those who knew her, Mitchell was a pretty cool broad — an expert on literature, sex, personal tragedy, and the art of swearing. Better yet, rumor has it she could seriously hold her liquor.

Self-help? Who needs it when you can drink a bunch of guy painters under the table?
