Broad Minded

She has that look. You know it. So pretty she’s ugly. So ugly she’s pretty. Anjelica Huston. Sandra Bernhard. Ahn Duong.

Calm down. It’s not a bad look. The French even have a special term for this incredibly sexy, pretty but ugly kind of girl: “jolie laide.” (Not surprisingly, we in the land of Britney have no obvious translation.)

Still confused? French/German painter Annabelle Verhoye can show you what it means. The women in “Jolie/Laide,” her solo show that opens today at the Jay Hawkins Gallery, are smutty and in-your-face, but in an attractive, gentle way. They look like the kind of girl you think you can’t take home to Mom — except that mom will probably love her.

Verhoye works in acrylic and spray paint on Plexiglas and takes inspiration from stained-glass windows. The results — ethereal, beautiful, and cool — recall Klimt and Japanese scrolls.

Who says you can’t feel smart and sexy at the same time?

Annabelle Verhoye’s “Jolie/Laide” will run from October 2 to November 2 at the Jay Hawkins Gallery, 526 West 26th Street, between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, #712 (646-638-2883); open Wed.-Sat., 1-6 p.m. To see other work, visit annabelleverhoye.com.
