Who’s up for an aventura?
If you answered yo!, then take the A (or the 1) train up-up-uptown to Washington Heights to Republi-K (which, despite appearances, is actually pan-Latin and pronounced “Republica”), opening tomorrow.
They call it “destination dining.” No kidding. We clocked 30 minutes from Times Square, which meant we arrived crabby and skeptical. But one look at the space, with its illusion-skylights and seashell-covered tabletops and chairs, and we started to warm up to the joint. One sip of the guanabana-and-Patron margarita, and we were really getting cozy.
Then came dinner. Corn cakes with short ribs? Three different ceviches? Or prawns with coconut-ginger sauce? Your call. Follow it with skirt steak or snapper with crab and shrimp sauce. Dessert? We couldn’t possibly. Pineapple dulce de leche napoleon? If you insist.
Of course, some prefer their cocina downtown. Agozar, now open, is run by Gerardo and Diana Perez, a brother-and-sister team who’ve done their best to re-create life in a Cuban household: vibrant colors, live music, empanadas, and mussels steamed in banana leaves.
Well. They don’t call it the Latin diaspora for nothing.
