Dinner at Eight?

This month, New York’s favorite chefs are playing the numbers.

Scheduled openings: Jean-Georges does fancy Chinese at 66. Wylie Dufresne (finally) opens WD-50. And as soon as he’s ready (today, this weekend … heck, maybe Monday), Mario Batali opens Otto (yes, that would be Italian for “eight”), his spin on the classic Italian enoteca and pizzeria.

Located on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 8th Street (formerly Clementine, an infamously cursed restaurant space), Otto is what you might consider Molto Mario for the masses. Baby got the cold shoulder trying to get a table at Babbo or Lupa? (Don’t feel bad. So did we.) Otto seats 175. Sure, you’ll still have to wait, so it’s a good thing there are more than 500 Italian wines to keep you entertained (and make you forget how long fifteen minutes can really be).

Batali’s thin-crust individual pizzas are served classico (like they serve them in Italy) or Otto style (Mario’s variation) and only cost nine to fourteen dollars. It’s not even open, and the place is already a hit.

Can the Batali crew do anything wrong?

For now at least, they’re betting they can’t.

Otto, 1 Fifth Avenue, at 8th Street (212-995-9559). You’ve been warned about the opening date, so please do call ahead before going this weekend.
