Leader of the Pack

The fanny pack: frumpy emblem of the nervous tourist.

Decidedly unsexy. Bulge-adding. Nevertheless, designers keep making new ones.

It was only a matter of time before one of them got it right. Eri Tomioka, a Japanese illustrator/musician/designer, has managed to turn the rump sack into a stylish and functional accessory. Using one-of-a-kind patterns and vintage fabrics, she crafts each to look like a low-slung belt with a cute clutch attached. Shapes and sizes differ, every one sporting fun, quirky embellishments, like pieces of electric guitars. (Okay. Really quirky.) The look is downright hip (yes, pun intended) and surprisingly flattering.

Definitely more jet-setter than sightseer.
