Last Friday we ducked into the Waldorf-Astoria just before 9 p.m. Pretty sure we were neither South American tourists nor our grandmother, we wondered what the heck we were doing there.
Getting our minds blown, it turns out.
Steve Cohen bills his Chamber Magic show as “a demonstration of modern conjuring.” But this was not the typical magic fare of modern times. No Siegfried & Roy disappearing glitter-covered tigers. No David Blaine PR stunts. Just simple, amazing memory tricks, sleights of hand, and plain unexplainable phenomena intimately staged in a hotel-room salon, re-creating an old-world parlor feel. The charming Cohen, a mini Conan O’Brien look-alike, relies heavily on audience participation and has quite a way with mind reading.
Don’t wrack your brains trying to figure it out, genius. Sit back and let yourself be astonished.
It’s the not knowing that’s the best part.
Performances are Friday nights at 7 and 9 p.m. at the Waldorf Towers, 100 East 50th Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues. To purchase tickets, go to chambermagic.com.
