New York Cares works with more than 1,000 city agencies to organize hands-on volunteer opportunities that cater to the hectic schedules and diverse interests of the city’s denizens. After a one-hour orientation, you can sign up for one of 400 team-based projects, most of which take place at night or on weekends. Supervise after-school yoga, help paint a community mural, or walk rescued dogs for a shelter. Commitment-phobes have no excuse: Most projects don’t require regular attendance. So no matter what you do, you can make an invaluable contribution to New York’s many causes.
