A Market Grows in Brooklyn

Is Brooklyn the new Manhattan?

Oh, come on. Does anyone even take that question seriously anymore?

Not that the boroughs don’t have their similarities.

DesignLot is a new outdoor market featuring up-and-coming fashion designers. It will run every Sunday through Labor Day in Fort Greene. Proving that the Meatpacking District, NoLIta and the Lower East Side aren’t the only destinations for NYC’s wanna-be-a-trendsetter set. (Duh and all.)

Blank on Blank, InsidersNY, Prizy Sebastian, and Vivian Bennett are just a few of the designers hoping to become the next CFDA award winner. (Ambika Bikini’s gold macrame two-piece is so hot it could melt a Sno-Kone.) But this is no flea market free-for-all; hopefuls are seriously screened before scoring one of the spots on the Lot.

To ease the strain for fragile souls unaccustomed to these waters, DesignLot has arranged for Café Habana to set up an outpost serving grilled corn, Cuban sandwiches, and Jarritos Mexican sodas.

A cute and welcoming touch. Not that you’re not going to complain about having to cross a little river.

DesignLot, South Portland Avenue and Fulton Street, Fort Greene, (718-230-8238). Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., through Labor Day.
