Detention Seeking

See if this rings a bell.

A brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal are all trapped in the library for Saturday-morning detention.

No, it’s not MTV’s latest reality show. The Breakfast Club, of course. And it’s time to relive the ’80s teen classic at You See Us as You Want to See Us … Reflections from “The Breakfast Club,” an hour-long play based on the original flick — with tunes from the original soundtrack and characters tweaked for comic effect. The jock is out of the closet; the nerd is Asian (an obvious nod to Long Duck Dong); weirdo Allison is battling her weight (must be all that sugar she put on her cereal sandwich); Molly Ringwald’s spoiled brat is an unattractive shrew. If all goes well, Principal Vernon will played by a revolving doorful of B-listers. (Paris? Monica? Get ready to shine.)

And Bender? Well, everyone’s favorite badass turns out to be just a plain old ass. Though you’ll probably laugh when he utters those immortal words …

“Eat. My. Shorts.”

You See Us As You Want To See Us…Reflections from “The Breakfast Club” is showing July 22-23 & July 29-30 at 8 p.m. at Opaline, 85 Avenue A, between 5th and 6th Streets (917-573-0992).
