Sophie's Choice

What’s the next-best thing to having Richard Meier design your new digs?

Having your boyfriend who works for him do it.

Resourceful and stylish: That’s Liz Grenier. Tired of selling her whimsical leather clutches at various downtown boutiques, she decided to strike out on her own. So she enlisted the boy and transformed a gritty East Village storefront into an all-white emporium of minimalist chic. The three pieces of furniture — a sideboard, a display rack, and an understated upholstered bench — were donated by friends; the name was lent by Liz’s five-year-old, Sophia.

In fact, Sophie Roan feels more like a personal dressing room stocked with everything you need to look your hottest. Like hand-dyed, layered silk separates from Seattle designer Wai-Ching and limited-edition silk-screened tanks from Brooklyn designer Wake. There’s silver jewelry, killer ’80s-style pumps, and even lip gloss.

Feel free to hang out and flip through vintage issues of Italian Vogue.

All the better to pretend you’re glamming it up across town in your Meier apartment on Perry Street.
