Bowled Over

Fruits and vegetables are known for lots of things. Broccoli’s packed with fiber. Oranges have Vitamin C. And cucumbers have the remarkable ability to make people giggle.

One thing they’re not known for? Their beauty. (Which explains why you’ve never read Keats’s “Ode on a Belgian Endive” or stared in wonder at Monet’s “Water Chestnuts.”)

Sculptor Margaret Dorfman sees things differently. Her handmade parchment bowls are painstakingly created from an array of fresh fruits and veggies — beets, Mexican papayas, carrots, watermelons, and peppers — cured, pressed, dried, and aged in a ten-day, chemical-free process. Dorfman then molds the colorful parchment carefully to make paper-thin containers that resemble budding flowers.

Each is finished with an invisible coating that maintains its botanical beauty, which means you’ll finally have a reason to talk about the unending allure of zucchini.

Without the snickering, please.
