Sell Out

Moving in together can require giving up a lot.

Your privacy. Your independence. Free rein of the bathroom. Not to mention half of your walk-in closet and your adorable Predicta TV.

Cohabitation: more than you bargained for?

It doesn’t have to be. Portero, a luxury internet auction service, will resell your unwanted goods — everything from art and electronics to that weird collection of sports memorabilia (deep breath, tiger: Let it go).

Here’s how it works. An auction expert comes to your home to assess your loot and determine the estimated value of each object. (Be warned, they only take goods worth more than $100.) They’ll then arrange a pickup, assuming you don’t want to lug the Jumbotron down three flights and to their Scarsdale or Greenwich offices.

But that’s not the only pesky detail they’ll manage. Authentication, photographs, descriptions, online listings (eBay is their site of choice), shipping, and all the financials are done for you. They’ll even handle finicky buyers.

The downside? They charge a $20 processing fee and a 30 percent commission.

Which may or may not be a deal breaker. Relationships, after all, mean give and take.
