Czech Mate

Prague Kolektiv Opens

It’s crazy what a little socialism can do for an end table.

Draw the Iron Curtain aside and peek into Prague Kolektiv, the new DUMBO furniture showroom that specializes in modern and midcentury Czech design.

What do pre- and postwar Czech furnishings look like? Simple lines, smart shapes, lots of lacquer, and a heavy dose of the Bauhaus. Which is all somehow perfect for now. We’re hot for a slick, three-drawer cream credenza; a shiny red, glass-topped serving cart on wheels; heavy leather armchairs with chrome tubing; and super slender seats made from bent plywood and upholstered suede.

A burled wood nightstand and set of glass carafes perfectly exemplify that design theory of marrying form and function. Ditto the art deco bedside clocks, porcelain sculptures, ceramic tea sets, and the ’50s lighting that lines the walls and ceiling.

And much like the tabletop world globe that’s begging to take a spin, you’ll be begging to take everything with you on your way out.

Be sure to tell them that the Czech’s in the mail.

Prague Kolektiv, 143-b Front Street, at Jay Street, DUMBO (718-260-8013).
