You know how it is with secrets: You can’t keep them. (Hey, they don’t call you Flapjaw Magraw for nothing.)
Here’s another one you’ll spill: El Bocadito.
The latest entry in New York’s Nuevo Mexicano revival, this LES 25-seater is in previews this week; the official opening is Thursday. We stopped in to sample the authentic Mexican street food.
The chips — nothing like you’re used to — are crisp, round, and gigantic (like Indian papadam). The guac is muy delicioso, as are spicy pickled veggies and cactus salad. Save room for taquitos dorados (crispy rolled tacos).
How authentic is the place? The music and wines are all south of the border. The prices are peso-cheap (nothing costs more than $10). And the handmade tortillas are cranked out on a wooden press.
They’re expecting a local crowd with “gentle spillover from the Stanton madness.” It’s dinner for now, but brunch and lunch are on the horizon.
The name, by the way, means “little bite.”
You’ll need a lot of those to fill your big mouth.
El Bocadito, 79 Orchard Street, between Broome and Grand Streets (212-343-3331).
