Inn Other News

And now the report from restaurant world.

The good news: A terrific spot opened today. The bad news: It’s in the Meatpacking District.

Sandwiched between Pastis and 5 Ninth, The Inn LW12 occupies the townhouse that was the legendary Rio Mar. Out went everything Latin, in came two (soon to be three) floors of British-club-meets-Canadian-lodge chic.

And talk about excellent eye candy. Don’t come with anyone you need to talk to — you won’t be able to concentrate, what with the 75 paintings of forest scenes, embossed wallpaper, canoe bookshelf, and mirrored ceiling.

This being 2007, they’re calling it a gastropub. But English chef Andy Bennett (who has worked with consulting chef Daniel Boulud) gives props to Canadian cuisine, from poutine (cheese fries with gravy) to beers and maple cocktails.

What’s with the theme? The owners are Canucks. And they’re not interested in a scene so much as old-world charm.

Oh, Canada.
