Read Between the Metro Lines

“Maynard and Jennica,” by Rudolph Delson

Basic transportation qualities aside, what is it that keeps you coming back to the subway? The sales? (Dollar batteries!) The science? (H2O or [NH2]2CO?) The mystery? (L’eau d’who?)

Or is it the possibility of a chance encounter? Perhaps like that of Maynard Gogarty and Jennica Green, the titular characters of first-time author/once-upon-a-time lawyer Rudolph Delson’s new book?

Maynard & Jennica is quite cute and romantic: Eccentric, artsy Manhattanite meets ambitious, neurotic California transplant. Quirky, modern, only-in-New-York type love and antics ensure.

But it won’t you make you sick: As told by 35 narrators (dead, alive, family, friend, charlatan, rapper, macaw, etc.), the story is unpredictable; the characters, charming and complex.

Aside from great live music (mariachi, olé!), Delson’s debut is the latest thing that could leave you wanting more time underground:

A good little book.
