U Pick

Hey, kids, want to hear something scary? Halloween’s around the corner.

Don’t look back now, but pick up the pace toward Long Island’s farms. First, stop at the rickety little Garden of Eve (4558 Sound Avenue, Riverhead; 631-722-8777) for organic goat cheese.

Then pluck shiny red fruit from the dwarf trees at Woodside Farms (Manor Lane, Jamesport; 631-722-5770) and scoop up warm pies, candied apples, and cider donuts in the lopsided apple shed. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to sample a cider slushie.

Wickham’s Fruit Farm (Route 25, Cutchogue; 631-734-6441) has the kind of produce that makes vegetable-deprived bodies weep. You’ll want to bring back homemade apple-rhubarb pie — your city friends will be crazy jealous — so look for the long line at famed Briermere Farms and get on it (4414 Sound Avenue, Riverhead; 631-722-3931).

The North Fork Table & Inn (57225 Main Road, Southold; 631-765-0177) is the area’s temple for good eating and living. The chef/owners have insane pedigrees (Aureole, Gramercy Tavern) and a serious commitment to local ingredients. Book one of the four rooms for impending food comas.

At the haunted (that’s what we think, anyway) Jamesport Manor Inn (370 Manor Lane, Jamesport; 631-722-0500), parties are seated in little nooks upstairs and down. The 19th-century house burned to the ground in ’05 and has been restored to its original state — period lighting, fireplaces, and a menu highlighting local estuaries and surrounding farms (right now, duck strudel is the hot-ticket item). There’s no longer a widow’s path, but there is an enchanted garden — the charming spookiness remains.

Got chills? Next thing you know, it’ll be Christmas.
