National Mentoring Month with iMentor

Despite popular belief, January is not Take Your Pants Off and Stay Home Month.

Nor is it Already 2009 and My Life Is Still Meaningless Month.

But it is National Mentoring Month — and the chance for you to make the most of unused resolutions with NYC-based nonprofit iMentor.

As a marketing director/music publicist/designer/self-made beeper king, you can make a real impact on young folks. Mentors and mentees e-mail once a week (iMentor provides prompts on issues like voting, finances, college tuition, networking skills) and meet in person once a month for trips to museums and local colleges.

Of the 1,000 students iMentor enrolled this year (many of whom are recent immigrants), 93 percent live below the poverty line. But 94 percent of last year’s enrollees graduated high school (compared with the city-wide average of 55 percent).

So there is hope after all.

Another thing this month is all about.
