Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

East Side Social Club Opens

east side social club!

A preview of the Gilroy family Thanksgiving.

Billy: We got a lot to be grateful for. East Side Social Club opens on Monday. The whole family, working together.

Jimmy: Here we go. My kid brother’s on a roll. What’s this, your 90th place, Mr. Macao Trading-Employees Only-Match?

Billy: You talk, Sir Legendary Sunday Night Bartender at Raoul’s for decades.

Jimmy: Hey. Don’t age me. Can I help it if we inherited the gene from Grandma, the original owner of Grotta Azzurra? (Before Little Italy was a culinary joke.)

Billy: Yeah, and East Side’s special. An Italian-American joint, like the social club Dad used to run on East 10th. Cozy booths, black and white photos of DiMaggio. Linguini with clam sauce, gnocchi Bolognese, sirloin with braised radicchio. Devon, my boy, you learned well at A Voce and Chanterelle.

Devon: Grace, tell Dad to shut up. You’re the GM. That’s your job.

Grace: That’s enough, guys. Can someone pass the gravy?

My friend and I were eager to try this restaurant, however we were GREATLY disappointed. It took quite awhile for anyone to take our drink order and then the Prosecco we were served, must have been old because there was not a single bubble in the glass. Also, my friend is a vegetarian and asked for a pasta with marinara sauce, however we were informed by the waitress that the chef does not make substitutions for anyone. We had such high hopes, but I will not be returning any time soon.

I had a chance to eat there last night and everything was delicious!! Our table started with the beet salad, superb acorn squash and eggplant appetizers. I had the swordfish, which was perfect! I've also tried their gnocchi, seafood pasta and pork chop and loved them all. I also recommend their gelato and the wonderful salted caramel/chocolate tart :) The interior looks and feels glamourous and comfortable at the same time, plus the lighting is very flattering! You'll feel like an insider here for sure ;D
