On the Town

little airplane studios!

You chose to live in this whirling city many moons ago, but having kids has put a whole new spin on things.

We asked Alison Lowenstein, author of City Kid New York: the Ultimate Guide for NYC Parents with Kids Ages 4-12, to share her five favorite spots where the crowds aren’t dizzying and little ones are welcome.

1. Tour Little Airplane Productions (the company behind Wonder Pets and Oobi) at South Street Seaport, where kids learn about creating cartoons and TV shows.

cercle rouge magic brunch!

2. Have your pancakes with a side of tricks at the Magic Brunch (Saturday and Sunday, noon-2 p.m.; Cercle Rouge, 241 West Broadway; 212-226-6252). Clown Ragidy Supreme and his balloon wizardry dazzle.

3. Roam the trails in and around Staten Island’s Greenbelt. Enjoy Lake Ohrbach (formed by glaciers during the last ice age) and thick forests (really), plus mini day camps that let city kids commune with nature.

4. Get into the swing of things at the New York Circus Arts Academy in Long Island City (5321 Vernon Boulevard; 212-751-2174). Aerial and ground acrobatics build strong bodies and boost self-esteem (ages 7 and up).

dewey's candy!

5. How sweet it is at Dewey’s Candy in Dumbo (141 Front Street; 718-422-1333). This shop is a colorful cornucopia of Wax Lips, Sugar Babies, Fruit Stripe gum, and more.

Get more great adventure ideas from Alison Lowenstein, Saturday, 3-5 p.m., at Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store, 365 State Street, Boerum Hill (718-522-9848 or blueribbongeneralstore.net).
