Target: Staten Island, New York
Time: 30 minutes
Board the Staten Island Ferry for the Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden (1000 Richmond Terrace; 718-448-2500), a beautiful 83-acre property that includes the Staten Island Children’s Museum (718-273-2060). Kids can explore pirate ships and rain forest canopies before hitting The Noble Maritime Collection (building d; 718-447-6490). Eat lunch on the water at nearby R.H. Tugs (1115 Richmond Terrace; 718-447-6369) and watch the boats sail by.

Target: Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, New York
Time: 1 hour
Pack a picnic and head north to the Storm King Art Center (Old Pleasant Hill Road; 845-534-3115), where an incomparable collection of 20th-century sculpture is set amidst rolling fields. Maya Lin’s majestic Storm King Wavefield, eleven acres of undulating grass, is the perfect place to wear them out before taking them home.

Target: Litchfield County, Connecticut
Time: 2 hours
Welcome to the quaint town of Washington. Hike in nearby Steep Rock Reservation and enjoy Lake Waramaug State Park for kayaking, canoeing, and swimming in pristine waters. Feast on sandwiches and freshly baked cookies at Nine Main Bakery & Deli (9 Main Street, New Preston; 860-868-1879), before checking into the Treehouse cottage at Winvian (155 Alain White Road, Morris; 860-567-9600). Kids will love the complimentary bikes and game room; you’ll head straight to the spa.

Fleece Fest
What: Watch sheep get shorn at Prospect Park Zoo.
Why: Afterward, head to a historic house to learn about washing, carding, spinning, and weaving wool.
When: Sat. & Sun. Shearing, 1:30-2:30 p.m.; lessons, 1-4 p.m.

What: This expo features the best in kids’ furniture design by some of Brooklyn’s finest, including Argington, Iglooplay, and CasaKids.
Why: Sunday features a lounge with face painting and Mother’s Day fun.
When: Fri., 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Sun., 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Green Golly & Her Golden Flute
What: Introduce classical music through a fun take on the classic tale of Rapunzel.
Why: The music of Mozart, Schubert, and Chopin comes to life for kids.
