We’re softees for these new frozen treats.
Joyride
Call it bro yo: Three Ivy-educated friends run this mobile truck that combines custom frozen yogurt (a blend of natural and Greek; $4-$7) with Stumptown coffee bar drinks. Try “buzzed” — fro yo infused with caffeine — topped with fresh fruit or jaggery, the honey-like sap of Sri Lankan jaggery palm trees. Today, catch them at 66th Street and Broadway from 10 a.m. to midnight. Follow them for updates and locations.
Guerrilla Ice Cream
Ethan Frisch (Allen & Delancey and Tabla) and Ori Zohar’s new frozen custard-meets-gelato is churned out in rich, nuanced flavors like chai masala ($3.50-$6). Find them on Saturdays at Hester Street Fair or Sundays at Fulton Stall Market, and watch as frozen banana toppings are bruleed with a mini blowtorch. Follow their Twitter for cart locations and info on ice cream-making classes.
Mia Dona Gelato Sandwich Cart
Puglian princess Donatella Arpaia knows exactly how to satisfy our not-too-sweet tooth. The restaurateur’s gelateria on wheels, parked outside Mia Dona (206 East 58th Street, between Second and Third Avenues; 212-750-8170), lures passers-by with pistachio and sweet ricotta scoops sandwiched between toasted brioche ($6). Stop by between 4 and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Simply Peeled
The UES’s newest soft-serve shack is set to launch mid-August and specializes in fresh fruit (1371 Third Avenue, at 78th Street; 212-794-2200). Distinctive textures reflect individual flavors (mango, banana, strawberry), though the under-100 calorie, four-ounce serving size applies to all three. While on line for the fat-, cholesterol-, and gluten-free snack ($3.75), soak in fruity goodness via the scratch-and-sniff banana wallpaper.
Je & Jo
Head to the GreenFlea market on Sundays (through September 26, noon-5:30 p.m.) for this new brand, which folds homemade organic ice creams (cinnamon, coffee, honey grapefruit) with cookie dough (oatmeal raisin, pecan sandy). Cups ($4) are scooped from a refrigerated case on the back of a tricycle.
