One-Way Ticket to Cocktailstantinople

orient express opens!

You’ve tried to keep up with the bar trends. But then you got stuck in a speakeasy and nearly missed the tiki train.

The next stop is art nouveau, and the swilling starts tonight at Orient Express, a downtown cocktail lounge from Turks & Frogs owner Osman Cakir.

Intrigued by the glamorous 19th-century locomotive, Cakir (an antiques collector) designed the space to feel like a dining car de rigueur. Brass luggage racks (stacked with vintage suitcases) are installed above tables for two. Vintage shakers, passports, and the OE’s original luggage tag were procured from a dealer in Istanbul.

First-class cocktails, developed by the mustachioed Cory Mason (Employees Only, Smith & Mills, Boom Boom Room), are dashed with spices, syrups, and tinctures inspired by train routes through Continental Europe. We look forward to one too many rounds of Le Voyage (rhubarb vanilla syrup, Cocchi Americano, soaked peaches, champagne).

A small menu (Hungarian skillet dishes, Turkish coffee, Austrian pastries) will debut soon, along with an afternoon tea that’ll transport you to Milan, Belgrade, and Paris. We’re on board.

Orient Express, 325 West 11th Street, between Greenwich and Washington Streets. You don’t need a ticket to ride — tour the Orient Express photo gallery.

Spike your lunch hour by making Tom Collins or gin gimlet right at your desk.
