It’s no secret that we have a sweet tooth. And our editor-at-large, Dannielle Kyrillos, is taking it to the next level as a regular judge on Top Chef Just Desserts, premiering on Bravo Wednesday at 11 p.m. Here she reveals her favorite places to get a sugar high in New York City.
Raspberry Beignets with Nutella
The Little Owl’s piping-hot beignets ($9) are crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside, dolloped with tart raspberry sauce, and easy to share. It’s the Nutella you dip them in that causes fights at the table. 90 Bedford Street, at Grove Street (212-741-4695).
Chocolate Tasting at Jean-Georges
Tattooed wunderkind (and TCJD head judge) Johnny Iuzzini created this ethereal but satisfying dessert ($16). The molten chocolate cake, warm brownie chunks, chocolate sorbet, honey ganache, and white chocolate sesame “nitro” are what cacao aspires to be. 1 Central Park West, between 60th and 61st Streets (212-299-3900).
Sigmund Pretzelshop’s Caramel Pecan Pretzel
The lovely Lina Kulchinsky makes a variety of scrumptious twists. But the meeting of buttery, sticky caramel; crunchy pecans; and a salty, perfectly chewy pretzel ($3.50) is the most craveable — especially when you can’t decide between sweet and savory. 29 Avenue B, between 2nd and 3rd Streets (646-410-0333).
Egg Custard Buns
I don’t want to know the secret ingredients in these pillows of sweet, egg-y goodness. The crust is flaky yet moist, and they’re less than $1. Let’s just say I’ve trekked to Chinatown at all hours. Egg Custard King Cafe is tiny, but the staff is sunny, and the cloud-like pork buns are great for breakfast. 271 Grand Street (212-226-8882).
People’s Pops
The peeps who make People’s Pops love what they do, and you can taste it in their inventive, fruit-intense flavors. Whatever is in season is the best bet; this summer’s yellow peach with hibiscus was like a two-minute vacation. My next obsession: Bartlett pear with ginger, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream ($3.50). Chelsea Market, 75 Ninth Avenue, between 15th and 16th Streets.
