When a brawny stranger offers you a rubdown to the pulsating beats of your choice, you should smile (politely) and run away (immediately).
When Kinetic Massage Therapy founder and instructor Edan Harari makes a similar proposition, the answer should always be yes.
In his could-be-gimmicky-but-is-really-kind-of-awesome musicology massage, the Swedish Institute-trained therapist choreographs strokes that mimic the rhythms of virtually any genre (house, R&B, indie, metal). To test his skills, we asked our research editor, Stephanie Almazan, to whip up a playlist for our treatment (download it here or let Harari select songs based on your mood or musical preference). His transition from Phil Collins to The Roots to the mighty orchestration of Arcade Fire was flawless. And when the CD began to skip, his Guns ’n’ Roses/bossa nova mix took over perfectly.
In addition to traditional massage techniques, Harari contorts limbs into yoga-inspired stretches to increase blood circulation and muscle relaxation. Consider it a full-body dance party you’ll want to attend repeatedly.
