Once upon last summer, a refreshments stand appeared on a Fort Greene stoop.
Behind The Stand were Nathalie Wiesner and her brother Jake, who made lemonade when life gave them juicy organic lemons. With the arrival of winter, they nixed the pop-up for a more sustainable venture: artisanal fruit syrups, marmalades, and pastes.
Intense-yet-sophisticated seasonal blends like tangerine, clove, and star anise; blackberry and Meyer lemon; and blood orange, triple sec, and cinnamon add zing to any cocktail or soda. But we recommend some kitchen experimentation: Drizzle the caramel apple over ice cream, fold maple blueberry into pancake batter, or incorporate tart lemon into roasts and grilling glazes.
The bottling process is labor intensive and the all-organic flavors sell out fast. Grab a few — along with candied rinds, brandied cherries (amazing in champagne), and alcoholic plums (coming soon) — before they become just another urban legend.
Available at Brooklyn Flea, 1 Hanson Place, at Ashland Place (brooklynflea.com). For a list of grocers, go to thestandny.com.
